As Commander In Chief, It Is Trump’s Job To Stop Russian Election Interference Going Forward. Who Thinks He’s Up For The Task?

Yesterday I wrote about how Mueller’s indictment confirmed what we already knew: that the Russians worked to influence our elections. So today, as the gun violence debate rages on against deaf ears and Twitter shuts down hundreds of bot accounts, we’re left asking ourselves; what is President Trump doing about it?

What has been the most disappointing (or some would say suspicious) is that instead of taking steps to hit back against Russia, our President has used the entire thing to talk about himself. Every time Mueller hands out an indictment, or a story leaks about who he is talking to, Trump takes to Twitter to talk about his he and his team are now vindicated… a defense that, as I noted yesterday, works for now but will be up shits creek if or when Mueller indicts an American (and considering two American’s who served under Trump, Michael Flynn and George Papadoplous already took plea deals, that certainly feels more like “WHEN” as opposed to “IF”).

The reality is, Russian interference into our elections is not about Trump. Whether it benefited Trump or not (and it almost certainly did) is not the point. It needs to be stopped, and the Commander in Chief should be responsible for stopping it.

There’s an old Vulcan saying about how Nixon was the only one who could go to China. It was because Nixon was SO anti-China and SO anti-communism that him being the one to open up talks meant more than had it been someone like Kennedy or LBJ.

That’s where Trump sits now; whether he likes it or not, he is THE Russian President. He has notably defended Russia, deflected blame, and worked to improve relations with Vladimir Putin, the biggest adversary to these United States.

And as such, he is uniquely positioned as the best person on the planet to put a stop to this.

As painful as this may be for many on the left to admit, Trump has a relatively easy opportunity here to be a pretty significant historical hero.

If Trump were to come out today and say “I’VE READ THE INTELLIGENCE BRIEFINGS FROM MY FBI AND CIA, I’VE GONE THROUGH THE MUELLER INDICTMENTS, AND I PROMISE YOU, THIS SHIT WILL NOT STAND. WE ARE GONNA FIGHT BACK. WE WON’T BE TREATED LIKE A THIRD WORLD SHITHOLE. WE’RE AMERICA AND RUSSIAN NEEDS TO BUTT THE FUCK OUT OF OUR ELECTIONS”… well then, he’d be a goddam champion.

His approval ratings would shoot through the roof. His party would likely keep the House and the Senate in 250-ish days, and his re-election campaign would likely be on cruise control.

Standing up to Russia would appeal not just to Trump’s base, but a majority of the country. From a PR perspective solely, it is the obvious move.

And the truth is, it IS what he should do. It’s his fucking job. He’s the Commander in Chief, and Russia has been pounding the blackholes of the internet where trolls run rampant in an effort to cause pain and suffering in the United States.

He’s President, and he should do something.

But he hasn’t. so he’s either shit at his job, or he’s afraid of standing up to Putin.
